Saturn in Aquarius – Solve et Coagula

Saturn enters Aquarius on March 21, 2020, and will remain until July 1, when he retrogrades into Capricorn. He will re-enter Aquarius for good on December 16, until March 7, 2023.

Saturn represents the totality of the known universe, as we humans can perceive it. In traditional cosmology, Saturn rules the outermost ring of the planetary spheres enclosing the Earth – his sphere represents the border between the planetary spheres and the fixed stars, where the mythic, eternal Forms reside that are even more eternal than the personal gods. This is the reason Saturn is the master of boundaries, walls, and locks; beyond his sphere, we simply cannot go. He represents the limit of our experience and understanding.

This consideration of Saturn’s journey through Aquarius as well as Capricorn, therefore through his own houses, will be somewhat different from the usual topics dealt with by the many astrological texts on this transit. Namely, it is the view of the author of these lines that this ingress is of particular importance to the topic we have analyzed earlier, in the Age of Aquarius trilogy which you can read here: The Age of Aquarius – Part One; Age of Aquarius – Part Two and Age of Aquarius – Part Three or when does the New Age begin?

I will try to explain this position below.

Solve et Coagula

The medieval alchemical motto, “solve et coagula” means “dissolve and coagulate.” The first step, dissolution, loosens material bonds and transforms rigid matter into finer, lighter stuff. Once the Materia Prima, as it is called, is reduced to its smallest parts, we move on to the coagulation phase, where we rebuild anew, this time using purified and spiritualized Materia. The result is the Philosopher’s Stone or Elixir of Life, a substance with legendary healing and transforming powers.

The alchemical process is analogous to Saturn’s passage through Capricorn and Aquarius. March 21, Saturn moves into his diurnal sign, Aquarius, having just exited his nocturnal home, Capricorn. As a diurnal planet, Saturn is more at home in Aquarius than Capricorn. It is also said that Aquarius, a hot and moist sign, provides a necessary counterbalance to Saturn’s extreme cold and dry nature. We can think of Saturn in Capricorn as extremely yin; commencing the “solve” phase, while Saturn in Aquarius is yang and focuses on building new edifices, or “coagula.” Saturn in Capricorn asks “what must I let go?” and Saturn in Aquarius asks “what can I rebuild?”

History supports this ancient alchemical wisdom. The last transition of Saturn from Capricorn into Aquarius saw the fall of the Berlin Wall, the end of socialist rule in the former Soviet bloc, and, after Saturn entered Aquarius in 1991, the dissolution of the USSR. Saturn in Aquarius forced the world to grapple with this new phase and create a whole new world order after the end of the Cold War. Saturn transiting his own signs during this five-year span promises massive dissolution, followed by an opportunity for growth.

Astrologically, the implications of this transit at this point can be considered as being even more important than those mentioned above. The reason for this is that later this year we have Great Conjunction of the chronocrators, which starts a new cycle of some 230 years, since the conjunction transitions into air triplicity. According to mundane astrology, this conjunction is considered as being of “medium importance” that gives us information on developments in religions, kingdoms, and dynasties, and announces the birth of a new religion or dynasty. In this respect, it is worth recalling that Islam originated at a time when this conjunction was “shifting” to Water triplicity. But also, this transition to Air triplicity has another important indication to which history also points. Namely, the last time we had this conjunction move to Air triplicity, Europe was faced with a plague pandemic known as the “Black Death”.

It was one of the greatest pandemics of all time and marked the end of the Middle Ages. In 1346, what appeared in Europe was what has been a nightmare, an essence, the empress of all dangerous diseases for centuries – the Black Death, a plague that spread from northern China, probably as a result of infections transmitted by rats and fleas.

The most dramatic (in Italy) is the case of Sienna, whose population has been reduced from 50 thousand to 10 thousand. Florence hasn’t always been Tuscany’s first city; before the “Black Death”, it was Sienna, “all roads led” from Siena to Rome, to Paris – gentlemen from Sienna were relatives of the French kings (hence Sienna is the only city in Italy whose buildings were built in the style of pure French Gothic); the greatest artists of the Middle Ages – Cimabue, Duco di Buoninsenia, Simone Martini, the Lorenzetti brothers … were from Sienna. In some way, Sienna never recovered from that pandemic; the city, in architectural terms, is forever frozen – when we visit nowdays Sienna, we go back to the fourteenth century.

In addition to the devastating demographic consequences, the Black Death affected the spirit of the society at the time – we have documents that show that people looked at each other suspiciously, that they hated each other; an explanation was sought, the culprit for the disease – most often the Jews were blamed, persecuted, lynched; and some, in the onslaught of irrationality (arising out of despair), attributed the epidemic to the will of God (punishment), and religious movements such as “flagellants” – whipsters were established, who practiced public self-punishment.

“Trijumf Smrti” – Pieter Bruegel, the Elder (1562)

Although it is very difficult to predict such phenomena, it is still noted that the medieval English astrologer John of Eschenden successfully predicted the “Black Death” – the plague, in 1348 from the eclipse of 1345, claims Lee Lehman, in his book “Classical Astrology of modern living“ (Atglen, PA: Whitford, 1996). The idea that the conjunction of 1345 was significant was widespread. The prediction for the Black Death, such as the one contained in this report from Paris’ School of Medicine in 1348, shows: “We say that the distant and first cause of this plague was announced by the configuration of the sky. In 1345, by the conjunction of three superior planets in the sign of Aquarius…. Aristotle testifies that this is the case… he says that race mortality and the depopulation of kingdoms occur at the junction of Saturn and Jupiter. “ Namely, on the day of Spring Equinox, which is the Mundane chart responsible for the period until the following spring, Saturn and Jupiter were in close conjunction in Aquarius, with Mars separating towards the end of the sign. John of Eschenden predicted “air corruption”. Gersonides himself is far more precise and provides a list of expected events, which includes “illness and death and evil that will last long.” When the conjunction takes place in a fixed sign, its impact will last for several days. Pingree gives ibn Ezra as a reference in this regard; and indeed ibn Ezra says “when a planet is in a fixed sign, it signifies all that is permanent.” Gersonides calculates Syzygium before the Sun’s entry into the Aries, which was an eclipse, especially important in medieval astrology, following Ptolemy’s rules, who says in Tetrabiblos, “the first and most powerful cause of such an event [the general conditions of the earth] is found in the eclipses of the sun and moon. “

What followed this extremely difficult period of mass destruction and the overthrow of an old order is, in a sense, even more, significant to us. This terrible drama, this gruesome tragedy, formed the basis for the Renaissance, because the world, after total devastation (demographic, economic), had to start from somewhere. After so much horror, there is a general recovery, a social renewal; after so much pain and grief, the world devotes itself to beauty, art, first and foremost in Florence, which will infect all of Italy and then Europe with this new magnificent virus. An economy started to rise, finding new models and new markets. Farmers, livestock farmers, artisans, traders started up … in a word, massive social changes followed.

The connection with current events is more than obvious. The current COVID-19 epidemic is very similar, although it may not have such mortality and devastation as the “Black Death”, it can certainly be expected to cause or initiate certain processes that will transform the world we live in. This epidemic is so serious and widespread because Saturn is entering the air sign as we move towards the era of the conjunction of chronocrators in Air signs, which will be repeated every 20 years. The entry of Saturn into Aquarius triggers this cycle of 230 years because the conjunction occurs at exactly 0 degrees Aquarius, so this entry of Saturn is a “preview” of the upcoming cycle, and especially its transit through Aquarius. As the last set of Great Conjunctions in the air signs brought us the plague, which, like COVID-19, is transmitted through the breath, that is, the air, we can also expect that this one will have a transforming effect on the world, similar to the one “black death“ had before.

Jofhra Bosschart – Vodolija

In which direction the whole story will go, it is early to predict. The epidemic’s reach is still unknown since it can only be stopped by developing a vaccine or through „community immunity“. In both cases, it is clear that it takes at least another year or two, so one cannot say for certain what the health consequences of the epidemic will be, let alone its effects on the economy and society as a whole. Having said all that, I think that the overall significance will be much greater than it seems. In any case, this period can clearly be interpreted as Toynbee’s “challenge” to this civilization, a “time of adversity”, and our response to that challenge will determine the further course of our race. The aforementioned Age of Aquarius trilogy dealt with the characteristics of the same from the aspect of mythology, esoteric philosophy, and astrology, so in these symbols, we can look for answers to the question of what form these changes will take. In principle, they can be divided into two effects. The first is a kind of vision of a dystopian future, in which the rule of the total state, or more precisely, the technocratic (global) government will be at its peak, in which many of the measures and restrictions on the freedoms we witness today as “temporary” will become permanent. Even if the current state is consolidated into such totalitarianism, its downfall also lies there, so, like any other Tower of Babalon, it will collapse. This kind of “fighting the virus” favors the described outcome, so it may be reasonable to ask whether this is a fight against Nature, because, as we have seen, such and similar adversities aided our evolution. And indeed it is very difficult to get rid of the impression that such pandemics are a natural process of purification that allows us to evolve and that has the potential to change our societies and expose our weakness as species when confronted with such natural forces. Here we can observe the other side of the possible consequences, which is the heightened awareness of Nature, how powerless we are before it, and that our only survival is in co-existence with it, not in a hopeless attempt to somehow conquer it, just as we do now when we’re trying to “fight the virus.” The answer probably lies somewhere between, or with the cumulative effect of these opposing forces, totalitarian government and repression on the one hand, and resistance that rests on the foundations of the aforementioned consciousness and ancient wisdom, which by dialectical formula should produce a new synthesis, a new renaissance. Towards the end of the Great conjunctions era in Air triplicity, after the Great Plague, the Renaissance brought about an explosion of learning as well as a love for the greatness of the human spirit unseen since the Antiquity. Is it necessary to remind now that Aquarius is a human sign? The bottom line is that the seeds we now sow may not sprout for two centuries, but it is inevitable that they eventually will. Air signs also rule engineering and science, whose progress we have witnessed in recent decades, but I appreciate that the greatest inventions are yet to come. Such discoveries more than ever have the potential to make a decisive “shift” in consciousness.

In this trilogy, I have labeled this next Great conjunction of the Chronocrats as perhaps the most important turning point leading to a new Aquarian age. As we can see, Saturn’s entry into Aquarius evidently triggers this cycle, so I believe that in the current circumstances, we can see the outlines of this new age and not only that, but that the most important events will eventually follow and finally establish it while ending the Pisces era, which will be noticeable through the extinction of its related forms, and more importantly, the creation of some new ones. Some of the dynamics of this process can be traced through subsequent conjunctions every 20 years, but of course, not just them. The point is that we are on the threshold of a new era, that the world is already changing and will only continue to change in the direction of the described Age shift, and that we have to let go of whatever disappears or “dissolves” in the process, so it can be concluded that this transit Saturn is the herald of this shift according to the “solve et coagula” principle.

Arabic lots – spiritual components of the natal chart (part two)

In the first part of this paper on Arabic lots, we have dealt primarily with their definition, role in the natal chart, and the concept behind these, perhaps even the most mystical, astrological factors. The topic of this section will be the four principal and most important Arabic lots in the natal chart according to Valens, namely Fortuna, Spirit, Eros, and Necessity.

First, let us consider the nature of the lots of Fortune and Spirit, as the two most important Arabic lots in the horoscope, which is evident from their calculation that includes both luminaries, the Sun and the Moon, and their relationship of “light and darkness” projected from the ascendant. If we know that luminaries and Asc are three of the four most important points in the horoscope (with MC), the importance of the said lots seems obvious.

Fortuna is the life quality of the soul, its earthly happiness and comfort, the gains and losses of life. Valens calls it an archetypal point (archetypal kleron). Both Valens and Dorotheus refer to Fortuna as a point to turn to if the triplicity rulers of the dominant luminary at the time of birth are poorly placed, emphasizing that if Fortuna and her ruler are well placed, despite the poor placement of triplicity rulers, the native will have joy and success in life, as the result of happy circumstances. As mentioned earlier, this lot is more concerned with matter and material acquisition, so it is one of the more important factors in assessing the financial and property opportunities of the native. As it is a lot of the Moon, it is more related to the lower psychic aspects, the material attachment of the soul to life. The Moon is the closest body to the sublunar sphere of bodily life and hence the Moon’s connection with the body and gluttony. Her virtue is hope that relates to the capacity of the soul to rise above the weight and scarcity of life. It is a reflection of the potential to survive even in the worst temptations of life with a preserved hope that more and better can be achieved. Gluttony is her sin. It refers to the “pollution” of the soul by earthly appetites and cravings. When Lot of Fortune is emphasized in the chart, it is indicative of great passions that are hard to satisfy, the desire for wealth, etc.

It is sometimes used as an alternative ascendant, so according to Valens, houses derived from Fortune are viewed similarly to those designated by the ascendant, although it can be said that they are more related to accidents that befall the native, his circumstances, and bodily issues. Valens particularly emphasizes the eighth sign from Fortune as a place that provides insights about the qualities of death. He finds these indications so important that they occupy a very important place in his chart examples of violent deaths. He also focuses on the eleventh sign from Lot of Fortune, which he calls the “place of acquisition”, highlighting the potential of that place to bring assets and goods when well placed, that is, when benefics are placed or configured with that sign. He also views the domicile ruler of this lot in a similar way to the ruler of the ascendant, so that the sign where this planet is placed would give important indications about the main topics in life.

The Spirit, Agathos daimon, pars futurorum or ta’alima as it is known in Hebrew, is the point of the divine spirit, the point of mystery and prophecy, often in itself a significator of the soul. It is related to the personal understanding and experience of God. Her virtue is Faith, and the very word says that it refers to the religious affinities of the incarnated soul. When emphasized in the chart it is indicative of the fairness and devotion of the soul. This is the lot of the right path to God and the lot of the highest spiritual aspirations. The spiritual aspect of the soul is faced towards the return to the timeless realms. The most important of the seven lots.

Her sin is pride, especially when poorly integrated. In Christianity, it is the original sin that preceded the fall of angels. This is, according to some authors, the most important of all lots because it is a symbol of a timeless spirit. We find it prominent in the charts of people with higher spiritual aspirations, most usually placed on Asc, MC, or in close aspect with the Sun or Moon, or their own dispositor or with the ruler of the ninth house. This lot, alongside its dispositor, is a symbol of the strength of the soul, its motivation, and its mobility. Being poorly positioned in XII, VIII, VI house or even in II house without aspect with any luminary or their dispositor, it indicates a weakness of faith, especially if Fortuna is more prominent and stronger, when it is regarded as a sign of an over-attachment of the soul to matter and time, but also it can signify atheism or the rebellious mind.

In medieval astrology, it had a similar significance, so Bonati states that this lot refers to God or relationship to God as well as secrets, and therefore it is associated with the natives’ concept of God or his highest spiritual concept, so its significance is enormous, especially in spiritual counseling because we want to know what is most valuable to the person in question. The approach to spirituality is thus also interpreted from the position of this lot in signs of different elements. So, when placed in air signs the native will value knowledge the most and will have a more intellectual approach to the matter, while the water signs will have more of a devotional approach, the fire will express it through their activities, philanthropy, and creativity, while the earth signs will be most focused on practical profits. The position of the ruler of the point will indicate the areas of life in which this urge will manifest most naturally. Also, this point can be used as an alternative ascendant, so from such horoscope, we could interpret the spiritual potential and concept of the native.

Vettius Valens
Vettius Valens

Valens has a different calculation method for the lots of Eros and Necessity then the one presented when seven hermetic lots were discussed

According to Valens, the lot of Eros is calculated by projecting the distance from the lot of Fortune to the lot of Spirit from the ascendant, reversed for night births. Valens says that Eros signifies desire (epithumia).

„The Lot of Love transmitting or receiving in operative signs, with benefics in conjunction or aspect, brings about moral desires and makes men lovers of the good: some turn to education and physical or artistic training; they are softened by their delight in their hopes and they do not consider their forethought/goal a matter of difficulty. Others are enchanted by love and intimacy with men and women, and they consider to be good.“ (Valens: Anthologies, Book IV, pg. 90)

From the above quote, we can see that Valens relates this lot to moral qualities and intellectual aspirations, but also sensuality, so in some nativities, Eros seems to be focused on the mind, while in others on the more physical level. From this point of view, we can conclude (in the context of other VE factors of the horoscope) how happy a person is in love, how much he is loved, how capable he is to love, how moral he is, and in what manner does he pursue good and spiritual issues. Like all lots it should be placed in a good house, a sign ruled by benefic, activated by close aspects from rulers, benefits, or luminaries. This lot is also called the philosopher’s lot by some interpreters. Hephaestion adds that Dorotheus describes how this lot is used by some astrologers in discussing the issue of friendship (philias), so he includes it in connection with this topic in his Apotelesmatics.

The Lot of Necessity is calculated oppositely. So, in day births it is found by determining the distance from the Lot of Spirit to the Lot of Fortune, then counting that distance from the Ascendant; for night births, the reverse method is used. Concerning the considerations in Part One, it is evident that the calculation method also has an underlying symbolic and philosophic background in the discussion of the ruling luminary, especially if we regard the lot of  Spirit as the lot of the Sun and Fortune as the lot of the Moon. With the Lot of Eros, we were also able to observe the movement from the luminary outside the sect – the Moon, towards the ruling one, the Sun.

Valens states that this lot indicates enemies (echthron). She seems to describe the nature and circumstances that accompany conflict and competition so that when the malefics are associated with it, it will bring failures and attacks, while when associated with the benefics it speaks of victory and that the native will overcome all temptations. So, Valens writes:

„The Lot of Necessity transmitting or receiving in operative signs, with benefics in conjunction or aspect, brings family ties, associations with the great, and the downfall or deaths of enemies. If malefics are in conjunction, it brings lawsuits, judgments, and expenses. As a result, men fail in their goals and live miserably. If the configuration is afflicted, men are condemned or ruined.“

It should be also noted that there are also special prognostic techniques that are based on these lots, which indicate the most important periods in life about the issues to which they relate. One is Aphesis, or zodiacal releasing technique, which can be calculated from the lot of Fortune for health and body issues, from the lot of Spirit for the most important periods in terms of career and reputation in the world, but also the lot of Love (Eros) has proven effective for matters of love and marriage. Also, Benjamin Dykes concludes that the transits of Saturn through the lots of Fortune and Spirit represent the most sensitive periods of life. A similar conclusion can be drawn for the other two lots that were described here.

So there we have it, an overview of the most important Arabic lots, which provides a somewhat more esoteric insight into the natal chart and the potentials of the incarnated soul in worldly life. Through them we can gain insight into the spiritual nature of the native, which is further expressed through the most important ethical principles that are complementary to the temperamental personality structure discussed earlier, thus somehow completing that weave of the Universe manifested through the unique physis of the native that is painted with symbolic astrological language through the natal chart.

Arabic lots – spiritual components of the natal chart (part one)

By definition, Arabic lots represent astrological factors found by mathematical calculations that include three other factors in the horoscope such as planets or angles. The distance between the two factors is added to the third (usually the ascendant), thus obtaining the position of a certain Arabic lot. It is one of the most important astrological concepts, although the most mysterious. The lots are thought to be more closely related to the spiritual part of human existence, so they are ascribed deeper meanings in the interpretation of the natal chart topics. In Hellenistic astrology, they were primarily used to give additional meanings to signs and houses in the interpretation of certain topics in the chart, e.g. if the lot of marriage falls into the second house and Scorpio, that house and its ruler add some significations concerning marriage, although these places would not be observed in connection with the said subject in some ordinary procedure. Furthermore, in practical terms, lots could also be regarded as that third point that astrologers would interpret in the context of a particular natal chart topic, such as offspring, marriage, career, etc. The first step would be to analyze a suitable planet, such as Venus concerning marriage. Then the respective house and its ruler would be considered, in this case, that would be the seventh house, and finally, the third step would be to analyze the appropriate lot, in this example, the lot of marriage. This is also implicit in the “threefold rule”, that is, if something is indicated in one area of life through only one of these three factors, then the outcome is possible, if two factors point to the same, then the outcome is probable, and if confirmed through all three, then the outcome is certain. By far the most famous is the lot of Fortune, also known as the lot of fate, but there are innumerable lots and it can be said that they flourished in medieval astrological practice. But the topic of this two-part study are seven hermetic lots, with special reference to the four lots that Hellenistic astrologer Vettius Valens pointed out as the most important, namely the aforementioned Fortuna, Spirit, Eros (Love), and Necessity, and these are dealt in detail in the part two.

Arabic lots originate from the Babylonian astrological concept of the relationship between the Sun and Moon through the arc of the longitudinal distance between them projected from the point of the horizon (Ascendant). Although some claim that their origins are Egyptian, it seems that, like everything in astrology, two basic astrological factors have been derived and conceived from this original order. In contrast to their commonly known name, Arabic lots have been developed methodologically for the most part in Hellenistic astrology. The Arabs added a large number of new ones to this method while retaining Greek heritage. Arabic lots serve for deeper natal analysis and to uncover the intrinsic meaning of the horoscope. The seven basic Arabic lots are the points of the soul, or those pillars of the soul, derived by analogy from the seven planets of the horoscope. These seven planets are related to Pythagoras’ numerical week and even earlier before him, with dualistic ancient Persian Mithraism, that is, Persian mysteries of the sevenfold initiation of worship, as well as the seven steps of the fall of the soul, which, on the way to the earthly embodiment, passes through 7 planetary spheres and to ascend through them back to one of the four celestial gates after death: Aldebaran – east, Regulus – north, Antares – west and Fomalhaut – south, which are therefore referred to as the royal stars and guardians of the heavenly gates. Plato’s interpretation of the fall (descent) of the soul seems to be inspired by the Persian mysteries. Plato speaks of the eighth sphere, the sphere of the stars, that is, the zodiac, which is considered to be the place where souls originate from and from which everyone, individually, on its journey to Earth, passes through seven planetary spheres in the Chaldean order from Saturn to the Moon. On this journey, the soul is enriched by each sphere, endowed (blessed) with the pure planetary essence of each planetary principle, which is more or less corrupted by earthly incarnation. After the death, the soul ascends in the reverse order of the journey (from the Moon to Saturn) to purify itself from earthly flaws through each sphere individually according to the type of flaw (about them later). The more it rises through the spheres and the cosmic purification, the soul becomes easier and purer to enter the eighth sphere of bliss perfected. Aristotle adopted this theory from his teacher. St. Thomas Aquinas, a worshiper of Aristotle, was familiar with this theory of the connection between soul and planet. There is speculation that this theory is closely related to the seven virtues and the seven deadly sins of Christian theology. The first three virtues: hope, faith, and mercy are known as theological virtues, while the other four (wisdom, steadfastness, temperance, and righteousness) are called natural virtues. These virtues are thus related to the planetary virtues and vices so that we have:

Planet Virtue Sin
Moon Hope Gluttony
Sun Faith Pride
Mercury Wisdom Envy
Venus Mercy Lust
Mars Courage Rage
Jupiter Temperance Greed
Saturn Justice Laziness

Virtues and sins are thus brought into correlation with the lots of the soul. This is especially notable if we observe that each planet has its “own” lot. Specifically, in Chapter 23 of his „Introduction to Astrology“, Paulus of Alexandria presented a method of calculating seven lots that are related to traditional planets, while citing the work known as “Panaretus”, whose authorship is associated with Hermes Trismegistos. These are called “hermetic lots”. In the picture below you can also see the method of calculating these points (all distances are projected from the ascendant):

arabic lots
Arabic Lots calculation table

The first thing that we can see here is that only the lots of Fortune and Spirit are calculated based on the distance between the luminaries (Sun and Moon), while in other cases, the lots are calculated from the distance between the corresponding planet and either the lot of Fortune or the lot of Spirit or vice versa. When it comes to this calculation, and in connection with the foregoing, we can observe certain important hermetic principles that are coming to light here. First, the ratio in these calculations seems to take into account the ruling luminary, or luminary of the sect. Thus we see that the calculation for the lot of Fortune always starts from the ruling luminary to the other, that is, in day births (where the Sun is the ruling luminary), this lot is calculated by measuring the distance from the Sun to the Moon, that is, the starting point is the Sun, whereas at night births it is the Moon, as the ruling luminary. Such a measurement seems to imply the idea of moving from light to darkness since the calculation literally moves from a dominant luminary at certain times of day or night to the luminary that is somehow obscured at the time observed. This can be related to a deeper hermetic conceptualization that darkness is associated with matter and physical incarnation. In contrast, we see that the math for the lot of Spirit is opposite, that is, it always starts with the luminary that is opposite to the ruling sect, or to the luminary that is dominant at a given time – i.e. from the Moon to the Sun in day births. This also implies a hermetic relation of light with spirit and intellect.

Some other patterns can be observed concerning other lots. As it can be seen in the diagram above, lots associated with positive significations, such as the lot of Eros and the lot of Victory (Jupiter), are both calculated from the lot of the Spirit. The others, which have negative implications, are calculated from a lot of Fortune. It is obvious, then, that the lots of the benefic planets are related to the concept of spirit and light, and therefore to the lot of the Spirit, while the lots of malefic are linked to the concept of darkness and matter, and hence to the lot of Fortune. It seems possible that these assignments were made simply due to the apparent brightness of each of the planets involved, with Venus and Jupiter being the two brightest visible planets, and Mars and Saturn being the darker visible planets.

It is also interesting to note that some lots are calculated from the lot (Spirit or Fortune) to the planet, and some from the planet to the lot, both in the day or night nativities. The possible rationale behind this may again have something to do with the dominant luminary. Namely, the lot of Spirit is also called the lot of the Sun, and the lot of Fortune is considered as the lot of the Moon. As we can see, during the day, the lots of Venus and Jupiter are calculated from the lot of Spirit towards Venus and Jupiter, respectively, or vice versa at night. The concept behind this comes from the principle that the Sun is the one that emits light by day, so his lot assumes the same principle, while at night it behaves more closely to the nature of the Moon, that is, it receives light. In other words, this calculation is based on which of the two luminaries is more dominant in the calculation for lot of Spirit. Therefore, in day births the calculation moves from the lot of the Spirit towards the corresponding planet, imitating the principle of emitting light similar to the Sun, while in night births this calculation will go from the planet to the lot, which now plays the role of “recipient” since the Moon is a dominant luminary. This applies only to these two points since it’s only them that include the lot of the Spirit. However, the same principle seems to apply to the lots that include the Lot of Fortune. As in the daytime, the Moon is the dominant luminary in calculating the Lot of Fortune, and just like the lot of the Moon is opposite to the dominant luminary, the Sun, it acts as the recipient of the light, so the calculation starts from the planet towards Fortune. At night, when the Moon is the ruling luminary and the Sun is the dominant planet in the calculation of the Lot of Fortune, Fortuna is the one that “emits” light, so the calculation goes from it to the corresponding planet. We will return to these observations when we talk about the lots of Eros and Necessity mentioned by Valens, which are calculated differently than described here.

Since the lots calculation methods are given in the diagram above, in the rest of the text we will focus on the description of enumerated hermetic lots according to Paulus of Alexandria:

Paulus connects the lot of Fortune with the Moon and points out that it signifies the body, the things that native does to acquire possessions, reputation, and privileges.

As stated, the lot of the Spirit is connected with the Sun, hence it signifies the soul, intelligence, the exercise of all power (dunasteia), and is sometimes relevant in determining the career of the native or his profession (praxis).

The lot of Eros is associated with Venus and signifies desire and appetites as well as friendships and services.

The lot of Necessity associated with Mercury signifies restrictions, oppression, fighting, wars, hostilities, hatred, condemnation, and other limiting circumstances.

The lot of Courage is associated with Mars, thus denoting boldness, betrayal, strength (or raw power) and all evil deeds.

The lot of Victory is associated with Jupiter, thus signifying faith, good hope, competition, all kinds of benevolence, enterprise, and success.

The Lot of Nemesis is related to Saturn, so it refers to the ghosts of the underworld, things that are hidden, weakness, sadness, and the quality of death.

Interview: The only way to know your fate is natal chart interpretation

From all the astrological terms, retrograde Mercury has definitely gained increasing publicity. Everyone knows that the period when this planet retrograde is a period when communication problems and misunderstandings are common, so it is not recommendable to sign a contract, bad assessments, and decisions seem inevitable, traffic jams, while some important documents, such as personal ones, can be lost. To this list, and the obviously poor publicity of retrograde Mercury, I have to add another from my recent experience – don’t do interviews when Mercury is retrograde! 🙂

Namely, about 10 days ago, I talked to a journalist from the local newspaper “Dnevne novine”, answering questions whose purpose was to bring astrology to a better understanding of a wider audience. However, when the interview was published, it came out with numerous and serious shortcomings, which not only thwarted the original intention but could cause additional confusion among the readers, despite the undoubtedly good intention of the journalist. For these reasons, but also to protect my integrity and approach to astrology that I nurture on this site, I decided to publish that conversation in its integral form here.

I can freely say that I have always been fascinated by one of the basic premises of astrology, and that is that each of us lives his uniquely own “piece of heaven”. It also inspired me to explore this thesis as thoroughly as possible. Confirming it through practice, I also discovered the beauty of astrological language that has written a wide variety of different natures and destinies, so this Art found a strong foothold in my spirit and being, already imbued by the research of Hermeticism. I was especially interested in this synchronicity connexion through which this “piece of heaven” is manifested in real life, and whose essence lies in the simultaneity of changes and cycles that take place in the sky, in the form of planetary movements, and in man, which excludes the cause-and-effect relationship between them (heaven and man). Thus, the planets and the celestial sphere move in parallel with the inner development of man, so, in that sense, it is incorrect to claim that the “stars” influence man and determine his destiny by that influence. Stars are just indicators and do not cause anything. Because of all this, the astrological connexion between heaven and Earth cannot be characterized as causal as it is often explained today, but as symbolic and mystical, acausal if you will, as it has been explained for thousands of years. The totality of these and many other insights have convinced me that astrology really “works” on many other levels, in addition to the initial thesis.

  • What are the most usual questions you get?

The questions are really diverse and their variety has convinced me that through astrological symbolism,     virtually every question can be properly answered. From questions about lost things, through emotional troubles and joys to some that we could characterize as philosophical, the answer was always hidden in the mystical connection I mentioned in the previous question, which is shown through the appropriate horoscope. Although I initially assumed that “matters of the heart” would be the most frequent, in practice it turned out different, so in addition to these, questions about work and career, litigation, health, and even death are very common.

  • Could you give us some comparison of what people are interested in now and before?

It is almost impossible to draw a significant parallel in interests since the interests are quite similar. However, it is worth mentioning that lately, people are increasingly coming up with questions about choosing the best time to start an activity, even regarding the birth of a child, although such interventionism is very limited here, there were such requests. This fact can certainly be taken as an indicator of the growing trust in astrology and its scope because people tend to provide a “cosmic stamp” to their endeavors.

  • What questions can a horoscope answer?

Following the above, the horoscope can give really all kinds of answers. Questions like “which career suits me best,” “when is the best time to start my own business,” or “will I have children” are practical questions to which astrology can give specific answers. But besides, astrology can answer deeper doubts, such as “how  to achieve my purpose in life.” All these answers are obtained through specific horoscopes that have their own “specialization”. Thus, the natal chart, also known as the “life horoscope”, provides information on various areas of life such as predispositions for educational and professional development, choice of occupation and career; business and financial opportunities; talents; love and marriage life; offspring and relationship with children; health opportunities and hazards… The annual horoscope covers the same areas at the level of one year, usually from birthday to birthday, and is based on the natal chart. The comparison horoscope analyzes a certain relationship and provides valuable information about how compatible certain people are and what is the level of that compatibility, which leads to the conclusion of how important and permanent the relationship observed is. The widest range of questions is covered by horary horoscopes, which are an extremely convenient astrological tool for providing precise answers to a clear and specific question. Will I get a job at that company? Will I marry him? Does she love me? Should I go on that trip? Will I pass this exam? Will he pay me back? Unlike natal, which is useful for a more general overview of natives’ life, horary astrology seeks to provide practical answers to these and many other questions on a “yes or no” basis.

  • Can a horoscope answer questions concerning society as a whole and the future of the state and/or the world?

Yes, there is a special branch of astrology, known as mundane astrology that deals with these issues. It deals with general events such as the destinies of countries, wars, revolutions, states, climate change, economic progress, social events, and all the like that affect a larger group of people. Sometimes some events can be read easily because they are really striking, but sometimes there are more subtle variants of prediction. The beginnings of mundane astrology can be found in Ptolemy’s book “Tetrabiblos” where the author describes the differences of peoples and how and why are they symbolized by a particular zodiac sign, claiming that the characteristics of peoples and customs of countries originate from their longitudinal and latitudinal position and their connection to the Sun. The methods of this branch of astrology are very unique and these interpretations are very complex and involve consulting several different horoscopes, such as the ingress of the Sun in the sign of Aries for the appropriate territory, but also to other equinoctial points. Solar and lunar eclipses are very important, but also the conjunction of the chronocrators Saturn and Jupiter is observed, which takes place every 20 years, but they also have other more important cycles, such as that of triplicity change, where the smallest cycle is somewhere around 200 years and the largest close to 800 years. Only through such a detailed analysis can predictions be made for a state or people.

  • The most interesting horoscope you worked on, a detail you remember?

There were really various curiosities and interesting situations, but here I would like to single out a kind of project that was a special challenge for me. Namely, I had a client who dealt with the stock exchange business, trying to predict periods of growth and decline of currencies and commodities on the Forex stock exchange. Although this was a completely new field of astrological interpretations and predictions, we still managed to develop a certain system that had a high success rate, since these predictions were done very often. I intentionally say “we” because it is one of the situations from which it can be seen how client experiences can help the astrologer in developing such special astrological systems. The degree of accuracy at one point was so good that the above-mentioned stock exchange company gave the client even opposite investment recommendations than the decisions he made based on our predictions, amazed by his investments and consequential profits.

  • Is there a relativization in the reading of the horoscope and a tendency for some statements to seem true to us, and in fact they can refer to almost everything?

We can “thank for” this tendency to modern astrology present in the daily press, which certainly relativizes things, starting with the fact that 1/12 of humanity falls under the same sign to whom the same things will happen. Such “predictions” must be made on such a broad basis and through claims that can really be applied to everyone because their basic premise is wrong. Namely, what they are doing here is an interpretation of the current transits, setting a certain zodiac sign as the ascendant of that hypothetical horoscope. Only in very rare cases, these predictions could be true, but most usually they are wrong and worthless and that is why we get interpretations full of the so-called “commonplaces” and uncertainties. Predictions that will be specific and true only for us as individuals can only be obtained from our natal horoscope, and the relevant prognostic techniques that arise from it. Only things that exist in our unique natal chart can happen to us as individuals when the time comes for them, that is when they are activated by predictive techniques. Therefore, it is wisest that we ignore these so-called daily, weekly and similar so-called horoscopes, and if we are already interested in the future through astrology, the only right way is the interpretation of our own natal chart.

  • How did the zodiac signs emerge and how were the characteristics of the signs determined?

The characteristics of the signs that we encounter most often today are also the product of the so-called “reformation” of astrology, and in fact, it is a mere degradation of the astrological object to make it somewhat more appealing to the masses. So today, when you meet someone, it is almost impossible to elude the question: what is your horoscope sign? As if that simple answer will provide you with some better insight into the character of a certain person. This is how I often hear people say to me “I am a Sagittarius” or “we are Aquarians like that” etc., which reduces the personality not only to this incorrect correlation but also only to some zodiac sign. And not only to the sign but on our imperfect (and often wrong) idea about it. These are pure speculations, without any astrological basis.

Traditionally, the zodiac signs never had any “personality” that would automatically be applied to all those born on a certain date. The approach was different. Authors from tradition do not give “descriptions” of signs, ie. they do not attribute some characteristics to them. In general, the qualities of the signs are listed, and then the things with which the signs are associated, ie which are symbolically corresponding to them (professions, animals, places, colors, etc.). For example, Aquarius is a fixed, airy (hence both hot and moist), diurnal (as opposed to nocturnal), male, human (not animal like Aries or Leo, etc.), loud (not mute like water signs), the primary house of Saturn, etc. It is these qualities that lead us to further associations and conclusions, which must be in accordance with them. Therefore, Aquarius would be chatty (human and loud sign), stubborn (fixed quality), intellectual (airy and human), striving to structure (Saturn), and so on. Since it is a masculine, aerial, human/intellectual sign, this will make Aquarius more forward-looking and forward-moving than, say, Capricorn (second house of Saturn), but that doesn’t strip them of the fixed, Saturnian nature, so they can’t be so rebellious or independent as they are often portrayed. This is the only purely astrological method that can be used to delineate some features of the zodiac signs. How all these qualities are attributed to the signs stems from the complex but coherent and clear system of true astrology, and whose further elaboration goes beyond the scope of this interview.

In addition, I enclose the text that was finally published. To put aside the editorial policy, as I said before, the published version is obviously incomplete, with additions that I am not the author of, especially the introduction and conclusion.

Age of Aquarius – part three or when does the New Age begin?

In the earlier texts that now make up the trilogy of the coming Age of Aquarius, we have dealt with the qualities of this Age through various symbolic representations. Thus, in the first part we looked at the age of Aquarius through the prism of mythology and esoteric philosophy, and the second part was concerned with astrological symbolism of the coming change. In this final part, I will try to come up with an answer to the question that has caused many brainy astrologers to sit and wonder, and that is when does this New Age actually begins?

The Aquarius era is considered to be a spiritual turning point – for society as well as for each individual. There is a lot of speculation about its beginning. Has it already begun, is it yet to come, or is humanity already in the middle of that Era? Opinions are completely divided, so that International Astronomical Union (IAU) takes the year 2601 as the starting date, some astrologers declare that the year 2375 is the beginning, and, as we are about to see, the opinions are equally incoherent among various mystics.

Our quest is hindered by the fact that the transition period during the shift of such long periods of time  takes quite a long time in itself as well. In this sense, I think that we can freely accept one of the fundamental astrological principles here, which is that when a planet or a horoscope point finds itself in the last five degrees of one sign, it already partially assumes the characteristics of the next. Why are these five degrees important now? Precisely because, according to generally accepted astrological calculations, the precession point of equinox is now at five degrees Pisces. Therefore, this may also be the reason why we are already feeling this coming change, as described above, so I think that in essence, no fixed date of this change can be determined, but that we are rather speaking of gradual flow directed by different turning points. One such point is the primary theme of this text.

It is worth revisiting here this famous precession of the equinoxes and what does it really mean? The Sun completely circles the zodiac every year and returns to the point from which it began – the spring equinox – and every year it misses a little to make a complete circle in the sky within the prescribed time. As a result, it crosses the equator slightly behind where it was last year in the zodiac circle. Each zodiac sign consists of thirty degrees and, as the Sun loses one degree every 72 years, it returns through the entire constellation (or sign) in approximately 2160 years (which represents one Age), and through the Zodiac in 25920 years. . This retrograde movement is called the precession of the equinoxes. This means that over the course of about 25,920 years, which makes one Great Solar or Platonic Year, each of the twelve signs occupies a position at the spring equinox for almost 2160 years, and then it shifts to the previous sign.

age of aquarius
Precession of the Equinoxes

This definition provides us with an essential information, namely that an astrological age lasts approximately 2160 years. So to determine when will Aquarius take the throne it would be important to know when the Pisces age began, and to measure 2160 years from that point. In this search, it seems to me that many have overlooked a very obvious reference, and this is precisely the calendar that we use. This calendar takes as its starting point the birth of Jesus Christ and is marked as a Christian era, a new era, that is, dividing time into that before and after Christ. When we remember that the current age of Pisces symbolically matches Christianity, we can quite clearly identify the concepts of the Christian era and the age of Pisces. From this setting, the calculation would be very simple, the Aquarius era begins in 2160.

Why is it that the religion is so significant in this story? According to Abu Ma’shar, “religion” is what precedes the formation of any ruling dynasty and, accordingly, it is the fundamental principle of every social order. It should be noted that he doesn’t refer to “religion” as being of non-secular type; it is a simple explanation that religion inspires people’s faith in the laws that stem from it. These laws in turn allow and give legitimacy to the formation of dynasties from which rulers are recruited. After the establishment of religion and its laws, it is possible to predict changes in centers of power between nations, even within the same nation, ie. between different ruling families. (1)

Thus, the true causes of the greatest changes in social order are not the shifts of individual rulers, but changes of religion that has primary power in establishing a new order. When we refer to “religion” we are usually inclined to think of some esoteric doctrine that necessarily contains the concept of “god.” But it is easily forgotten that everything that requires to be fatefully accepted is a religious doctrine, whether it is belief in some “higher power” or that human ethics and morality are the highest authority (“democracy”). The only difference between these is that one is secular, the other is not.

Whether they have been aware of this important fact or not, but many esoteric and other traditions have emerged, proclaiming their religion or teaching as a paradigm of the new age, and that it is their doctrine that represents the new world religion that will usher in the Age of Aquarius. We described many of these currents in the first part of this trilogy, when we stated that we did not see them wrong or contradictory, but as different aspects of one current.

age of aquarius
Atu XX – Aeon – from “Non Est Secundus Quia Unus Est”, book of Tarot archetypes by Richard Moult

Thus, for example, Aleister Crowley proclaimed that the New Age began on April 8, 1904, when he received an obscure publication called the Liber Al Vel Legis (‘Book of Laws’) from the “celestial powers” in the period between April 8 to April 10, proclaiming it to be the “Bible” of the new era. At that time, according to his interpretation, the “Aeon of a Murdered God” (Osiris) was replaced by the “Aeon of the Crowned and Victorious Child” (Horus). In the 1938 issue of Liber Legis, in connection with the arrival of the Horus Aeon, Crowley considers: “ He rules the present period of 2,000 years, beginning in 1904. Everywhere his government is taking root. Observe for yourselves the decay of the sense of sin, the growth of innocence and irresponsibility, the strange modifications of the reproductive instinct with a tendency to become bisexual or epicene, the childlike confidence in progress combined with nightmare fear of catastrophe, against which we are yet half unwilling to take precautions. ” Similarly, Anton Szandor LaVey founded the Church of Satan in 1966, also as the religion of the new aeon. Furthermore, the Theosophists tell us, through Alice Bailey, that according to Tibetan teacher Djwhal Khul, behind whom the Eastern Hierarchy of the “Master of Wisdom” powerfully stood, Aquarius was inaugurated in June 1945. on the full moon when, at the strongest energy base beneath the Gobi Desert, Christ-Maitreya assumed the scepter of power, becoming supposedly the World Master and Leader for the next 2,500 years: “In the center of this triangle / = Light, Love and Power / Christ has taken His position : from this point His work begins in the Age of Aquarius, and will last for 2,500 years. Thus, He began a new age, and a new world religion began to form on the inner spiritual levels. ” According to Jungian astrology, it is on February 7, 1962 that we entered the Aquarius era: at that time, most of the planets of the solar system were grouped in Aquarius. Divine clairvoyant Jean Dixon (USA) stated that on February 5, 1962, the Great Antichrist was born – “A child born somewhere in the Middle East shortly before 7:00 A.M. (EST) on February 5, 1962 will revolutionize the world. Before the close of this century, he will bring together all mankind in one all embracing faith. This will be the foundation of a new Christianity, with every sect and creed united through this man who will walk among the people to spread the wisdom of the almighty powers.” In the sixties and seventies of the twentieth century, there was a certain awakening among humankind, Aquarius was everywhere present; but the nature of this movement was rather raw, rebellious and enthusiastic, best exemplified by the hippie movement, which sought to make opium and psychedelics a religion for the people; but it should be said that in those eccentric hippies who anemically and anecdotally imitated Christ, some saw those who are “preparing” the coming of Aquarius in all its power.

Now it would be worthwhile to consider some methods of mundane astrology, especially the so-called Great Conjunction of chronocrators – Jupiter and Saturn, which can give us significant insights in this regard. So, in the first chapter of the first part of his work “On Great Conjunctions”, Abu Ma’shar states what elements for the purposes of mundane predictions need to be analyzed.

The first place / level takes the transition ie. the return of the JU / SA conjunction into signs of fiery triplicity and this is the so-called Great Conjunction. Abu says that this new beginning occurs in the sign of Aries every 960 years, but if we look at the series of conjunctions of the chronocrators 7000 years back, we will see that it never happened in Aries, but all were without exception in Leo (except the last one, which happened 1663 to Saggitarius). This period does not last for 960 years, but for the period from 795 to 854 years.

However, the actual number of years is a side matter, the essential idea is that the return of the conjunction of the chronocrators in the sign of fiery triplicity becomes an indicator of a universal new beginning, a radical change in the structure of the previous order of things. The last such change occurred in 1663, so it is interesting to note that it was followed by social and political changes that almost perfectly fit into the symbolism of Aquarius. Thus came the Age of Reason, the Enlightenment, and numerous revolutions such as the French and the emergence of the United States of America, which in a sense can be considered the epitome of that “new democracy” stemming from the maxim of the French revolution “Liberté, égalité, fraternité” a guiding idea in this brave new world. There is also the industrial revolution, which, in only few hundred years, was inherited by the enormous breakthrough and advancement of science and technology, up to the quantum physics and information age we are witnessing today. However, this “new democracy” faces many adversities, so we cannot quite accept that it is this new religion of the coming age.

On the second level, we have the so-called „medium conjunctions“ ie. those that transition from triplicity to triplicity, representing a change over a period between 179 to 238 years, as the series of 12-13 conjunctions of chronocrators last in signs of the same triplicity. This indicator provides information on developments in religions, kingdoms and dynasties, and announces the birth of a new religion or dynasty. The second level is contained in the first and not vice versa; the former gives indications of the latter, but the latter cannot give indications of the former, which points to a clear hierarchical principle upon which this theory rests – in accordance with the philosophy of astrology as a whole. It is especially interesting that such a change, that is, the transition of the great conjunction into Air triplicity, occurs precisely on the winter solstice in 2020, namely at 0 Aquarius!

What could all this change bring? In the sense of the foregoing, I think it is worth recalling that the shift of this conjunction into water triplicity, more precisely in Scorpio, led to the birth of a new religion – Islam. Can we then interpret this next conjunction, though this time in air triplicity, as predicting of the emergence of a new religion or a new doctrine that is so necessary in the Age of Aquarius? What we can find in the sources of the astrological tradition is that Abu Ma’shar gives an overview of the strength of conjunctions depending on the sign in which they occur, and explains how the transition of conjunction to the new triplicity generally reflects the geographical shift of centers of power / influence. Conjunction in airl triplicity symbolizes the rise of the peoples of the northern regions, the strongest of those conjunctions being in Aquarius, medium in Libra and weakest in Gemini. As conjunction occurs in Aquarius, traditionally, this sign is related to the following areas: according to Ptolemy, Asian Russia, the wider area around the Amu Darje River on the northern border of nowdays Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan all the way to the Aral Sea, Arabian Peninsula, whole East Africa. According to Vettius Valens, places symbolized by Aquarius are: the Red Sea and Egypt, Syria, Iraq, Libya and northeast Europe above the borders of ancient Thrace. The same parts of the US and Canada belong in the subdivision to this sign. That is, all northeastern parts of any geographical entity can be assigned to aerial signs so that the northern parts always belong to Aquarius, south to Gemini, and Libra to the easternmost.

In general, these would be some areas where significant changes could occur and that are most likely to  shape the main stream of the currents of this new Aquarius’ age. By this I do not want to proclaim 2020 as the year of the beginning of the Age of Aquarius, but merely point out this important symbolic representation as being particularly indicative of the new age. Without any intent to announce some extremely apocalyptic scenarios, I still think it is important to keep in mind that the possibilities are indeed numerous – it may be the birth of a new world religion, the creation of a new bloc or alliance of states, perhaps the birth of a new leader, some revolutionary scientific discovery, or something similar. The modality in itself is not that important, as much as the fact that this is something that will essentialy and decisively direct the development of humanity towards the symbolic representations of the Aquarius era, the qualities of which have been discussed in the previous section. It is through this symbolism and characteristics, with the above geographical and formative references, that we can follow the events in the period after 21.12.2020. for the said change will represent their strongest sublimation. That is, some new religion or doctrine will have all the features described above and will emerge among the peoples of the north, and I would say that it will be the most important impulse in unwinding of this shift towards the Age of Aquarius. This will create fruitful ground for the emergence of new archetypes, mythos, new urban legends with ancient rural legends restored, which will open a portal to something still mysterious that cannot be accurately described by the known words, so we look for it in the language of symbolism. The process of gradually discovering this spiritual impulse is both collective and individual, marked by various turning points. Mankind as a whole goes through this process, just like any individual human being. Accordingly, this observation of mine may only be yet another of such points, which ultimately doesn’t have to prove as being so important, although, due to its temporal reference and symbolic significance, in conclusion, I would describe it as being of strongest influence so far.

Age of Aquarius – part two

In the previous text, we have considered the Age of Aquarius from the perspective of religion, mythology and esoteric philosophy, now it’s time to look at the astrological connotations regarding this issue. At the outset, it is worth considering the traditional astrological symbolism of the Aquarius zodiac sign. First, it should be said that Aquarius is a male, airy, fixed, hot and moist sign of human and Western symbolism. It symbolizes high places, roofs, eaves. It has a light blue color. In terms of the west, it may be significant to notice that religions and mystery schools have been saying that the Messiah will appear in the west.

The symbolic emblem of Aquarius is the aquifer, who is, while kneeling, pouring the water he brings in the act of humble service. Although classified as an air sign by its elemental qualities, Aquarius is, in many respects, considered a “forgotten” water sign, its very name indicates this connection to water, and ultimately it draws many of its symbolism from the aquifer’s spout. But this symbolism of the free flow of water has little to do with the ever-burdening ocean of the psyche displayed by the signs of water triplicity, but in this act it seeks to purify, enlighten, and clarify. The floods that followed the culmination of this sign and seasonal change were seen by the ancients as periods of refreshment, when the earth, again baptized, would be cleansed of sin. The month of February was named in honor of the purification ceremonies that would take place during the passage of the Sun through Aquarius (Latin: Februa = purify + auris = pertaining to), when society’s attention would be focused on purifying home, body and soul. After the cleansing, we are restored, so this classic symbolism also captures the element of youth and innocence through the identification of the aquifer with Ganymede, whose gentleness and beauty captivated Zeus, as we saw earlier.

In traditional astrological sources, we come across the following descriptions of  Aquarius:

aquarius
The symbol of Aquarius

Vettius Valens says that „Aquarius is the celestial sign which is masculine, solid, anthropomorphic, somewhat damp, single. It is mute, quite cold, free, upward-trending, feminizing, unchanging, base, with few offspring, the cause of troubles arising from athletic training, carrying burdens, or work in hard materials, an artisan, public. Men born under this sign are malicious, haters of their own families, incorrigible, self-willed, deceitful, tricky, concealing everything, misanthropic, godless, accusers, betrayers of reputations and the truth, envious, petty, occasionally generous (because of water flow), uncontrollable.“ (Anthologies, Book I)

The astrological influences of the constellation given by Manilius:

“The youthful Waterman, who from upturned pot pours forth his stream, likewise bestows skills which have affinity with himself: how to divine springs under the ground and conduct them above, to transform the flow of water so as to spray the very stars, to mock the sea with man-made shores at the bidding of luxury, to construct different types of artificial lakes and rivers,” and to support aloft for domestic use streams that come from afar. Beneath this sign there dwell a thousand crafts regulated by water. Why, water will even set in motion the face of heaven and the starry habitations, and will cause the skies to move in a novel rotation. Never will the sons of Aquarius grow tired of the works which come in the wake of water and follow springs. They who issue from this sign are a gentle sort and a lovable breed, and no meanness of heart is theirs; they are prone to suffer losses; and of riches they have neither need nor surfeit. Even thus doth the urn’s stream flow” [Astronomica, Manilius, 1st century AD, book 4, p.243.]

Firmicus Maternus in „Mathesis“:

“If the ascendant is in Aquarius, whatever the native attains will be lost and ruined; whatever he seeks he will lose again, but whatever he has lost he will regain easily. He will do favors for many and help them with means of subsistence, but they will always be ungrateful. He will be in great danger so that his life is despaired of, but he will be freed by protection of the gods. Many men will attack him with fierce hatred. He will work with divine or religious writings and will be known to many for his good deeds. ”

Abraham Ibn Ezra:

“Aquarius is one of the air signs, male and day, moderate in the group of winter signs, immobile, its ascension hours shorter than normal (short ascension), tilted on the ecliptic. Its nature is warm, moist and destructive, symbolizing the air that destroys everything that is alive and exterminates. A man born under this sign will be low in stature, with a large head and one foot larger than the other. He is generous, attractive and confident, and his only ambition will be to increase his wealth. He will either be impotent or with few or no children. Born in the first face (decan) of this sign, he will have a beautiful face and body, with a scar on his chest and will be refined. Born in the second face, he will be tall and ugly and have a scar on his back and below the elbow. Throughout his entire life he will be miserable. The one who is born in the third decan of this sign will be low but attractive and will be lover of women (will be craving). At the very end of the sign, a man will be inconsistent in his appearance and actions… ”

To understand Aquarius, we can hardly do anything better than take the other three kerubic signs and harmonize them. The Aquarian has all their powers and qualities to some extent, but never to excess. He has the kindness of Taurus without its blind devotion, the courage of Leo without his combative and challenging qualities, the scientific spirit of Scorpio without the passionate intensity. Aquarius is essentially the all-round man. One cannot put one’s finger upon a definite lack in his character, and at the same time, one cannot say that he markedly excels in any feature save that of being armed at all points.

As we can see, the descriptions vary a lot, which partially complicates our task of putting them in the context of the Age and its peculiarities that we are talking about. Nevertheless, the interpretation of Robert Zoller, one of the leading astrological authorities, especially from the point of view of its esoteric essence, can certainly help us here, which interpretation we find to be the most complete. Therefore, Zoller notes the following:

During the Piscean Age, the benefic Jupiter ruled the angles. Jupiter ruled both Pisces on the 1st and Sagittarius on the 10th, and thus, while there was confusion of hierarchical religious institutions and political institutions and while this inevitably led to hypocrisy, the Age was nevertheless one in which truth and philosophy mattered to men. The Piscean Age will, as this Aquarian Age unfolds, be seen as a halcyon period of semirespite from the essentially malefic and spiritually destructive nature of life.

In the Aquarian Age the malefics once again rule the angles and with them returns the natural severity of worldly life. Where once the religions of the Age south to embody the City of God in early hierarchies, the New Order will seek to perfect the Machiavellian political philosophy that “its better to be feared than loved if one cannot be both.

The Novus Ordo Saeculorum, the New Order of the Ages, will rule through the power of life and death (Scorpio, which is on the 10th), through behaviour modification, cloning, genetic engineering, mind control and the occult. Might makes right in this New Age. If the preceding Age produced metaphysical materialists, who duped the people through the opiate of religion, the New Age will produce materialist metaphysicians who will make the preceding political power elites look like inept apprentices.

In the Age of Aquarius, religion will be humanistic love of fairness and justice. While feeding the people with Libran platitudes, the Scorpionic rulers will work tirelessly toward the realization of their goal – absolute power over others, as Leo is seen in position on the 7th house. The will of the people will be towards freedom of expression (Aquarius), and they will be encouraged to do their own thing so that they keep their minds off what their rulers do.

Scorpio rules through oligarchic power elites who manage to be seen in the light they wish to be seen in. This means capturing to the utopian hopes of the people: offering them the collective doctrines such as socialism (not necessarily Marxism, but in one of its many guises). Extreme brands of Fabian communism and new versions of communism have merged with technocratic, scientific socialisms to produce a new strain of sociopolitical reality in which it is often impossible to discern left from right. These changes have been apparent since the 1990s and will continue. The west, as was so tragically shown on September 11th 2001, is increasingly coming into conflict with the traditional values predominating in the east. We will see this conflict intensify until the dialectic brings a proper resolution.

The family will be considered property, and in the great selfless movement to come, great pressures will be put upon the population to dissolve family completely. So great will be the pressure that in some cases familial connections will have to be kept secret. Those who are able to maintain the blood bond (in all its various manifestations) will be in a position to wield extraordinary power temporally, economically, and politically. These groups will give rise to certain secret societies, which will quietly cultivate the traditional values and institutions until the 2160 year dark age is passed. These secret societies, or secret families, as indicated by the earthy triplicity Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn – especially Taurus and Capricorn – will be the only direct route to the traditional Prisca Theologica, the true, secret, esoteric tradition, since ten signs from Capricorn brings us to Libra. This indicates the area in which the activities of these groups will be felt, in the 9th house, where they will be surreptitiously supplanting the official party line regarding religion, or more properly philosophy. The word religion will be offensive to the humanistic emphasis of the Age.

We cannot forget, however, that Saturn, ruler of Aquarius, is exalted in Libra and that in the Aquarian Age Libra will be on the 9th house. Thus there will be strong drives among Men during the Aquarian Age for 9th house teachings. The emphasis will be for the most part humanistic, for the preference for ancient forms in Aquarius and Saturn will preserve the ancient teachings, even though other forces in society will, as we have said, seek to suppress them.

Thus, the Aquarian Age, while not a dualistic Age, will nevertheless be intrinsically one in which the battle between spirit and matter will go on as never before. The opportunities for perfection, (Saturn as ruler of the 1st and exalted in the 9th) will be greater than ever, and the obstacles due to the doubt inherent in the Air signs. Aquarius, for instance, in an Air sign, and in the libertinism of the Age will also be greater than ever. Social interaction will be philosophic (Sagittarius is on the cusp of the 11th house). Groups of friends discussing and studying philosophical subjects should be a common enough occurrence that, occasionally, one will find some who seriously approach the teaching, (Sagittarius – three signs from Libra and from the archetypical 9th house). Many social groups will centre on the athletic activities, which are also Sagittarian.

Money will be seen as a means for satisfying one’s sensual drives and fantasies (Pisces on the 2nd), as well as providing emotional security, specifically as a means of escaping from the unpleasantness of the world. The co-rulership of Jupiter of the 2nd and the 11th points to income being a more important means to social selection than at present, despite the apparent universal socialism of the Age.

Knowledge will be valued only insofar as it leads to the ability to wage war and destroy, because Aries is on the 3rd house. In fact, the cultivation of knowledge as a source of military power will eventually lead to a secret means of altering and controlling such things as earthquakes and the Earth itself, even the core. This knowledge will be held by secret societies and eventually leads to a new socio-political system far more earthbound than the Capricornian Age after the year 4320.

As the Aquarian dream of humanistic science and universal brotherhood is a vision of the world to come in Pisces, and realized in Aquarius, so too, the Aquarian avant-garde will look forward to an Aquarian Golden Age on the one hand, while the Aquarian technocrats will look for a world corporation to fossilize society into a rigid caste system run technologically. Elements are already working for this, but, while it may be realized to some degree in Aquarius, the Age being essentially rebellious will deny it and present innumerable obstacles to its completion until the Age of Capricorn.

The danger in Aquarius is the abuse of knowledge and science, not of industry and trade.“

age of aquarius
Richard Moult – The Exile’s Song

We can already testify to many aspects that indicate that this famous Aquarian era will not be as colorful and beautiful as the descriptions that are often encountered suggest, because one cannot neglect the fact that it is an era dominated by the essential malefic. However, it is true that Saturn is slightly different in Aquarius, it is its main house and the place he most rejoices in, so it has more intellectual qualities here. Aquarius is the sign of the highest intellectual abstractions and achievements, and in it Saturn gives an intelligent, very stable and rational nature capable of understanding the most difficult intellectual problems, and as such is more scientific, and therefore this rapid development of science and technology is not surprising. But we are also fearful as to where is all that development leading us , because robotics, genetic engineering and the like are leading towards the creation of a mass of obedient robots and dehumanization. Yet, when we recall Saturn’s symbolism, we see that it also symbolizes all those who are humble and withdrawn, persistent, serious and devoted to science, symbolizing orphans, eunuchs, monks, ascetics and sages, magicians and those who practice magic and those who know the secrets and who convey the secret knowledge. It represents our grandparents, symbolizes long life and longevity, the elderly, and in the night charts it represents native’s father. The reference I find most intriguing is about those who know the secrets and pass on the secret knowledge, since Saturn is the planet of esoteric philosophy, and especially in nativities that have this planet as almutem figuris. I particularly find this evident in the airy Aquarius, which is also one of the best positions for Mercury. Consequently, and as Hall correctly observes, the Sun assumes the symbolism of the sign of precession, and therefore its divine form, so it is to be expected that this time will bring some new symbolic synthesis of science and religion, or spirituality, that complement each other. This is especially notable when we consider fanaticism of science as the antithesis of religion, so it is only logical that, according to the old dialectical formula: thesis-antithesis = synthesis, some new science and spirituality will emerge, which will be the paradigm of this new age. Something like this can already be observed in theories of quantum mechanics, parallel universes, and the like that are increasingly gaining scientific ground, while dealing with those unfathomable segments we traditionally regard as god. On the other hand, in this theological and symbolic sense, Saturn indeed represents Satan, and in many ways his age is already here, but we cannot say that this new age entirely can go into such heavy materialism and self-indulgence, since these conditions are a kind of antithesis to centuries long  religious suppression. Ultimately, I believe that in the future, in this new age, science will evolve towards the development of cosmic potential and the conquest of the Cosmos, but not through a purely empirical and over-obsolete scientific method that is fundamentally materialistic, but through a new method by which we will attain parallel universes, thus developing our potentials and awareness for a new evolutionary leap, which is certainly the Cosmic destiny of humanity. The Age of Aquarius will indeed give us unprecedented opportunities to attain spiritual liberation, purification toward enlightenment, but nevertheless, as astrologers, we cannot ignore the darker, sinister, and malefic forces of the planet Saturn that will be in operation during this period. Moreover, I think we will witness a dystopian future in at least one period, but there are still enough indicators to hope that we will be able to direct our evolution toward the vision described above, even if we have to go through the already described technocratic tyranny.

From these two texts we have been able to gain enough interesting insights into the characteristics of this new age, whose outlines we can clearly recognize in the present, so we have yet to determine when this new age comes, which we will deal with in the third part of this series of texts.

Age of Aquarius – part one

Aquarius and its age are one of the major astrological, but not only astrological, debates. Starting with the hippie movement of the 1960s and the famous Age of Aquarius theme, we wonder when this “golden age” will come, whether it is already here, what will mark its beginning, etc. According to some authors, the main symbolic lines are already present, and although there are promising aspects in the form of spiritual liberation and the like, we can also note some negative trends. This is especially true of the fact that the 20th century was marked by the greatest casualties in human history (60 million in World War II, and another 40 million during Mao Tse Tung), the atomic bomb and the most devastating weapons ever, but also by rapid scientific and technological advances, man first set foot in space, so the conclusions of that new age are at least ambivalent. Of particular importance is the paradigm that will be dominant in this age, since it depends on how further scientific advances will be employed, which will in many respects also determine the main trends. In this quest, we decided to follow the path of symbolic representations, beginning with mythological, religious, esoteric and of course astrological, as the most relevant, given that all currents of human history have their roots and origins in them.

As the deepest symbolic meanings on a particular topic can be obtained from relevant mythological material, we will first address the myth that lies behing the constellation Aquarius. This is so because all the symbolic threads that form the later basic features of what they represent, be it on individual lever, or on the level of certain nation(s), state(s) or even of one Age, are woven into the myth. This stems from a kind of dialectical connection between Mythos and Ethos, in which Ethos (to put it simply – ethics) actually imparts the basic symbolism of myth to the level of applicable, and more importantly adopted social rules at the level of collective consciousness, from which  more concrete principles and rules derive that so form reality. For us, this relation may be best observed  in the relation of the Myth of Kosovo and the Serbian people, whose complete ethics and faith are built on that Myth. Likewise, the Aquarius myth certainly offers us enough symbolism to interpret its future ethos and thus to discover the key aspects of the coming age.

Aquarius is based on the myth of Ganymede. Ganymede is known as a classic mythological figure from the heroic age of ancient Greece. The myth is first mentioned in Homer, who presents Ganymede as one of Troy’s three sons, the legendary founder of Troy. Because of its extraordinary beauty, Ganymede is abducted by the gods to be a cupbearer to Zeus and enjoy the life of an immortal. As is common with Greek myths, different forms of story have developed – some heroes are referred to as the fathers of Ganymede, who is abducted by the gods, or even Zeus himself, or on his command. When the kidnapper is Zeus, he appears either as a mortal, or takes the form of an eagle, or orders the eagle to grab the boy as he leads his flocks to Mount Ida. All the gods rejoiced in his coming except Hera who despised him. Hera, in fact, complained that this offended both her and her daughter Heba, who had until then served the gods with wine; however, she only managed to anger Zeus, who put Ganymede among the stars as Aquarius. Some mythographers claim that this was the reason why Hera was against the Trojans in the Trojan War. Ganymede’s father mourned for his son. With regret, Zeus sent Hermes with two horses that were so fast that they could even run on water. Hermes convinced Troy that his son was immortal and that he now serves wine to the gods, and that he did not need to worry. It is also interesting to observe that aspect of Zeus’ love for Ganymede, which is often cited in ancient sources. At an early age, god and boy were considered archetypal lovers. Sophocles (fifth century BC) writes of Ganymede, who “inflames the power of Zeus with his thighs.” This couple also served to justify the homoerotic tradition. Hence the sixth century BC Teognis speaks of Zeus and Ganymede as an example of the joy of love with a boy, and ends one short poem with the words: “So, Simonide, don’t be surprised that I knelt in love with a wonderful boy.” The myth was inspiring for poetry, and we find it in Ibikus in the sixth century, and in Pindar and Euripides in the fifth century A.D. When Xenophon (fourth century) portrayed Socrates condemning copulation between men, he felt it necessary to remove all the appeal of the myth of Ganymede by interpreting Ganymede’s name (Ganymede is in Greek a compound of the adjective ganos – great and medea – male genitals but also prudence, cunning) as referring to someone who is of “tempting reasoning” rather than “tempting body” (or genitalia), which would be a more relevant interpretation. As we can see, the Ganymede myth has been interpreted in different ways. Plato believed that the myth was invented by the Creteans to justify love relationships with boys or young men. Xenophon explained this myth as a moral allegory that signifies the superiority of the spirit in comparison with the body (the etymological basis already mentioned), which would prove that intellectual rather than physical advantages gain the favor of the gods and ensure immortality. The Renaissance interprets this myth in connection with the Neoplatonist doctrine of furor divinus. In his commentary on Dante’s Purgatorio, Landino explicitly draws the line between Neoplatonic and Christian interpretation. Plato says that his abduction is “cleavage from the body, and since he forgets material things, he focuses fully on contemplating the mysteries of heaven.” In this respect, I am particularly interested in the symbol of the eagle, since the Eagle is one of the forms of the constellation of Scorpio, though the rarest. As Scorpio is a sign of occult initiation, the flying eagle – the king of birds – represents the highest and most spiritual type of scorpion in which it transcends the poisonous terrestrial insect. We will return to this reference later when we talk about astrological symbolism and its interpretations.

age of aquarius
The Abduction of Ganymede

The Aquarius constellation, identified with Ganymede, first represented the Egyptian god who ruled over the well of the Nile, pouring water rather than wine from the condy (Pindar: Fragment 110). More specifically, it is Osiris, the symbolic god of the Nile. The Nile would float in late July and is associated with Leo, during a full moon in Aquarius. This act symbolized Osiris’s dominance over the earth, who was then killed and torn apart, to eventually resurrect. Aquarius is therefore a vital force that renews and fertilizes all things.

What exactly is the precession of the equinoxes, and what are the principles on which it resides? The Sun completely circles the zodiac every year and returns to the point from which it began – the spring equinox – and every year it misses a little to make a complete circle in the sky within the prescribed time. As a result, it crosses the equator slightly behind where it was last year in the zodiac circle. Each zodiac sign consists of thirty degrees and, as the sun loses one degree every 72 years, it returns throughout the entire constellation (or sign) in approximately 2160 years (which represents one age), and throughout the zodiac for 25920 years. . This retrograde movement is called the precession of the equinoxes. This means that over the course of about 25,920 years, which makes one Great Solar or Platonic Year, each of the twelve signs occupies a position at the spring equinox for almost 2160 years, and then passes the place to the previous sign.

For the ancient peoples, the Sun always symbolized the shape and nature of the constellations through which it passed to the spring equinox. For the last nearly 2000 years the Sun has shifted to the Pisces constellation (two Pisces) at the spring equinox. 2160 years before it had passed through the constellation Aries. Previously, the spring equinox was in the sign of Taurus. During these times, or eras (aeons), religious worship takes the form of a corresponding celestial sign – of the one that the sun takes as his personality, in the same way that the spirit takes over the body. During this period, in ancient Egypt, Apis (bull) was dedicated to the sun-god, worshiped through the animal equivalent of the celestial sign, which, at the time of his passage into the northern hemisphere, was filled with his presence. This is the meaning of the ancient saying that the celestial Taurus “broke the egg of the year with its horns.” Then the Sun took over the body of Apis, and the Bull became dedicated to Osiris. In the Old Testament, we find a reference to this shift of aeons, when Moses, upon his return from Mount Sinai, found his followers glorifying the Golden Calf, which he then destroyed by throwing it into the fire (which signifies purification and rebirth), and then, as we find in Genesis 22:13 : “ Abraham looked up and there in a thicket he saw a ram caught by its horns. He went over and took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering instead of his son.” During the Age of Aries, the Lamb was considered sacred and the priests were called shepherds. Sheep and goats were sacrificed on the altars, and the scapegoat was designated to bear the sins of Israel. During Pisces, the fish was a symbol of divinity, as the Sun God fed the crowd with two small fish. Not only is Jesus often called the Fisherman of the People, but, as John P. Landy writes: “The word Fish is an abbreviation for the whole name, „Jesus Christ, Son of God, Savior and Cross“, or as St. Augustine says: “If you combine the initial letters of the five Greek words Ιησούς Χριστός Θεού Υιός Σωτήρ, you get ΙΧΘΥΣ, which means Pisces, a word through which Christ is mystically understood, because he was able to live in the abyss of this mortality, as in the depth of water, but without sin ”. Aquarius is the name for the man with the pitcher of water on his shoulder referred to in the New Testament (Luke 22:10; Mark 14:13), when the apostles should prepare the Last Supper, and Jesus instructs them to follow the man carrying a mug of water. It is also referred to as the “Face of Man” in the Book of Revelation, as one of the fixed signs of the Zodiac. From a mystical point of view, this can also be seen as a guideline, since the apostles have traditionally been associated with the 12 signs, the so called houses of the Sun, so the entry into the house where a man with a jug of water leads them, can also be seen as a reference to entering in the age of Aquarius, especially if the myth of Christ is taken as a symbolic representation of the whole age of Pisces, or Christianity. He is sometimes portrayed as an angelic character, supposedly androgynous, who either pours water from an urn or carries a pot on his shoulder. Among the Oriental peoples only a water bowl is used. According to all this, the Sun will still take the form of the zodiacal sign in which it is located, ie. Aquarius, which is a human sign, hence the emphasis on humanism and the age itself will adopt the symbolism of this constellation, both in religious worship and in ethics.

Esoteric philosophy is the next one whose insights are worth considering in this regard. This is because precisely the different Schools of Mysteries knew how to properly understand and employ these symbolic mythological representations, often even creating individual myths themselves. Therefore, in this place, we would like to address one esoteric aspect of the time, which concerns the Age, or Aeon, as well as their succession.

In the last few centuries, since Occultism in the West experienced a renaissance and some ideas began to spread more openly – many mystical and esoteric traditions occasionally proclaimed the appearance of a New Age, naming it and describing it differently, relative to one another. Some Masonic authors have heralded the Age of Aquarius, on the basis of astro-theological heritage; The Theosophists spoke of the ages of the seven human races, relying on the Hindu tradition of the seven ages, proclaiming that we were currently living in the age of the fifth Aryan race; The Hindu tradition teaches that we live in the age of Kali-Yuga; The Order of the Nine Angles, although it has a slightly different concept from the Theosophical, also recognizes the seven ages in the development of the human species, but proclaims this present age – the Age of the Mother of Blood; Crowley and the Telemites believe that we are in the Age of Horus – a child, after the earlier times of Osiris – the father and Isis – the mother; Anton Szandor LaVey and the like proclaim the Age of Satan, etc. At first glance, studying all these teachings, of these different traditions, one might think that there must be contradiction and that all these ages are not fully compatible with each other. Needless to say, all followers of the above traditions are blindly clinging to inherited dogmas, largely denying others. We see things a little differently. We see no contradiction or genuine conflict between them all, but consider that they all speak only of different aspects of the same New Age. For example, one can already feel the coming of what the “Age of Aquarius” should represent – rapid and remarkable spiritual and technological progress, as well as a sudden break with the tradition, values and religions created in the “Age of Pisces”; All these achievements have been predominantly presented by representatives of the Aryan race, if the Theosophical classifications are to be reiterated; Hypocrisy, injustice and insanity also ruleng, as described in the Hindu representations of Kali-Yuga, along with the appearance of devotional and compassionate religious forms, devoid of traditional and restrictive ritualism, both in the East and in the West; There is also an evident increase in the dominance of the female principle and female influence in society, but not that of the motherly and caring female principle from the cave age, but precisely as represented by the Order of the Nine Angles through the archetype of the Mother of Blood, manifesting itself as the judge and executioner of the patriarchal system so far. . ; Again, Crowley is correct in referring to the Age of Child-Horus, in which, as he describes it himself, there will be evidence of widespread confusion, incoherence, increased freedoms, bisexuality, homosexuality, and the outbreak of the most insane and bloody war conflicts; Of course, LaVey also accurately proclaimed the age of Satan, since Satanism as such is increasingly accepted as a perfectly legitimate religion, that Satan is publicly worshiped, and that all those things that were once “sin” and “devil’s work” are increasingly accepted as standard and something normal. So, esoterically, we see all these representations of the New Age only as different aspects of that and such an Age, which complement one another.

In the second part of this quest, we will look for answers in purely astrological symbolism, which will give us additional insights into aspects of this emerging new age.

Astrology – the language of Nature: part two – About Time

In the previous text, we talked about astrology as a symbolic expression of the physis, or so-called nature of living beings, primarily humans. We did this through a description of temperament and Destiny that unfolds as a necessity of the manifestation of that unique nature. In this text, we will basically follow the same line, but we will now deal with the concept of Time, as a key segment of that same physis and how it is manifested in astrology, making it complete in the symbolic description of the nature of the native. Since astrology is mostly a predictive skill, time is certainly its essential factor. It is the starting point of any interpretation, since if we do not have the time of an event, we do not have a horoscope. And even the word horoscope itself, etymologically, contains time, since it comes from the Greek ὡρόσκοπος, or ὥρα (hora) which means “hour or time” and σκόπος (skopos) – observer, observation, and ultimately we get “observation of time of … (birth, etc.) “. This is so because every being, or any other event and everything that occurs on this planet, is determined precisely by the time of its birth. Time summarizes all the qualities of nature in a given moment which is imprinted in the nature of the native like a seal, and therefore in his destiny.  Time is also the greatest resource that man has at his disposal, but he is also always in race against it, and always lacks it, never able to catch it, man is torn between the past and the future. Time is a conflict of spirit, soul, and material body, for these three are united temporarily, by mortality. Ancient alchemists had a widely known secret formula for overcoming Saturn (Chronos – Time) which reads: “time should be mastered by the rhythm that will turn it into the eternal now”.

This connection can be most obviously made by observing the seasons. The seasons are also basic division of time at the level of the year, and one of the principles that Zodiac is divided upon. So, the first three signs – Aries, Taurus and Gemini – embody the attributes of Spring, each in its own way: Aries, as cardinal, marks the beginning of that age, while the most typical characteristics of spring are embodied in Taurus as a fixed sign, and finally we have Gemini, which, as a mutable sign, still retains spring attributes but they are now largely mixed with summer. And so it is with the other seasons and the corresponding zodiac signs. The position of the Sun in some of them is our birthday, but more importantly, the symbolic attributes of that season are manifested in our temperamental structure, ie. nature or physis. Accordingly, the Sun in Aries will bring warmth and moisture, that is, sanguine temperamental expressions, as they are suitable for spring. From what has been said, it can be clearly seen how much we are really a part of the nature that surrounds us as just another offshoot of it, connected to it in the most mystical way, which we can interpret through astrological symbols.

saturn time
Saturn (Chronos)

But, in addition to that, the basic premise is that Time is already inherent in all living beings, it is part of their own physis. This stems from the fact that Time is Numinous – that is, of living beings, and thus biological not linear (of-causality).  Accordingly, Time varies according to Physis. That is, varies according to the nature, the character, of the living entity that manifests – presences – it, so there are a variety of different species of Time. Each living being has a Fluxion (since Time is a Fluxion) appropriate to – which re-presents/manifests/presences – its physis and thus which is appropriate to/manifests its type/species of life. Therefore, our kind of Time, us as humans, is different from those that correspond to other life forms. We can clearly witness this by observing the nature around us and thus see how different forms of life have some time of their own that is part of their nature, as the appropriate processes of their development take place when the time comes for it. So, animals have mating seasons, migration seasons, hibernation seasons, all in accordance with the fluctuations in Nature that activate their internal cycles. Although these processes can be monitored at the species level, they are equally individual, because not every bear goes into hibernation at the same time, but each of them does so in accordance with its inner time, which dictates the pace of their development and ultimately evolution. It’s the same thing with plants, and of course with humans. It should be noted that this flow is not linear, but more spiral, since some of the same seasons are repeated at regular intervals, but each time at a different level from the previous one, so there is no repetition as such, no matter how it appears on the outside. That illusion of repetition and identicality, ie. a line that goes only forward, has given us yet another abstraction of the calendar measurement of Time, although it does not coincide with our actual, inherently own time. So, not all people that are 40 are equally old. Nor does spring come every year in every place on March 21st. Yet it seems that the people here have once again exchanged essence for form, giving precedence to the latter, though aware of its incompetence. The primary purpose of the calendar seems to have been forgotten, and that is to be a symbolic representation of Time, not its faithful indicator.

It should certainly be noted that all these individual times are subordinated to some higher fluctuations of Time and cannot “override” them, more precisely, they are only their segment. Each of those greater Time cycles possesses some of its own characteristics, some of its own zeitgeist (spirit of time), and  human natures and their times are subordinated to that spirit, i.e. to his aeonic or evolutionary force, so man is “… just a straw among the ‘whirlwinds.’ In this broader perspective, human natures do not necessarily embody all the characteristics of the given Age, they can be its antithesis, and perhaps the harbingers of some Change, but all this still remains as “Nature’s intent” that we talked about in the previous text. So some Times will favor bad people, without honor and morals, as leaders in those periods, giving them the highest functions and titles, while those who are different, precisely because of their nature, thay are simply lost in that whirlpool, that is, they are in a certain discrepancy with the course of Time, either late or in a hurry, while the natures of these others are synchronized with that course. Of course, it is clear that leaders are only an expression of a collectively unconscious need, and perhaps the latent aspirations of the majority towards that same way of life and such a character for which there is secret admiration. From what has been said, it can be seen what kind of feedback mechanism is in force here and how the change of consciousness can give an evolutionarily progressive momentum, but like a pendulum, it can go in opposite direction.  However, this is already a story for a new text that will deal with these larger time cycles, also known as the Ages or Aeons, and especially because we are close to a new one, Aquarius.

But let’s get back to the key topic. So, each person has its own time, period or season in which his potential matures and reaches a peak, so there are no regularities, although generalizations of this kind are somewhat symbolic and appropriate. Because just as it is true that everyone has their time, it is equally true that everything has its time. This Flow in astrology is represented through seven phases or periods in life, corresponding to the seven planets – starting from the Moon and, in the Chaldean order, all the way to Saturn. Life is divided into periods of planetary rulership so that the period of the first four years is ruled by the Moon, then to the sixteenth by Mercury, Venus from 16 to 22 and then from 22 to 42 is the period of the Sun, then to the age of 56, of Mars, when Jupiter takes rulership up to 69 and then, for the rest of life,  Saturn takes over. All those times were beautifully described by Shakespeare in his play “As you like it”:

“(…) All the world’s a stage,
And all the men and women merely players;
They have their exits and their entrances,
And one man in his time plays many parts,
His acts being seven ages. At first, the infant,
Mewling and puking in the nurse’s arms.
Then the whining schoolboy, with his satchel
And shining morning face, creeping like snail
Unwillingly to school. And then the lover,
Sighing like furnace, with a woeful ballad
Made to his mistress’ eyebrow. Then a soldier,
Full of strange oaths and bearded like the pard,
Jealous in honor, sudden and quick in quarrel,
Seeking the bubble reputation
Even in the cannon’s mouth. And then the justice,
In fair round belly with good capon lined,
With eyes severe and beard of formal cut,
Full of wise saws and modern instances;
And so he plays his part. The sixth age shifts
Into the lean and slippered pantaloon,
With spectacles on nose and pouch on side;
His youthful hose, well saved, a world too wide
For his shrunk shank, and his big manly voice,
Turning again toward childish treble, pipes
And whistles in his sound. Last scene of all,
That ends this strange eventful history,
Is second childishness and mere oblivion,
Sans teeth, sans eyes, sans taste, sans everything.”

Seven stages of Life

As we can see in this most general division, the Moon rules the period of the first four years of life, which is quite corresponding to the fact that this is the period when children mostly absorb impressions from external reality, to which they react only emotionally and unconsciously, when they are very dependent on their mother, so everything symbolically corresponds to the Moon. The experiences that the native will have in that period are portrayed by the natal position of the Moon. Therefore, although this period is somehow universal for all people at that age and experiences are similar, the  real experiences will again be individual, conditioned by natal predispositions. Like in some of the previous writings, I would present this principle again through Mars and Venus. In that respect, it has always been interesting to me how, for example, certain professions, such as modeling, have a precisely timed period when those careers can begin, and that is exactly the period of Venus, that is in those adolescent years. Likewise, men generally experience their zenith in the forties, which is the period of Mars, while in women it is the opposite, since that is when menopause occurs. It is worth adding that the temporal conditionalities in this division also derive from the previous observation about humors in the body. So we have that the sanguine period is characterized by the first quarter of life and blood as the appropriate life juice, and so on to the cold and moisture of phlegm and black bile, so it is not surprising that this end of life belongs to Saturn, which unites it all with its symbolism. Even in colloquial terms, we come across these parallels, such as “autumn of life”, etc. This division of Time is further “brought down” by astrological predictive techniques to an increasingly individual and thus unique experience. Thus we have Firdaria periods which are the division of life into planetary periods, also according to the Chaldean order, but starting from the ruling luminary at the time of birth, i.e. the Sun in day and the Moon in night births, so these periods are interpreted in accordance with the natal position of the corresponding planet. Furthermore, more and more concrete techniques such as Firdaria subperiods, profections, primary directions, progressions, planetary, solar and lunar returns, which increasingly specify a certain time for an event, fit into this framework.

One of the primary considerations when interpreting the natal chart is the assessment of life expectancy, ie. our very lifespan is contained in the natal chart. This assessment starts from the hyleg, the planet or point that is the carrier of life force, and its ruler, known as the alcohoden. Alcohoden is the planet that has the most dignity in the place of hyleg, and according to some authors, it also has to aspect it. Each planet can assume the role of alcohoden and each one of them have their small, medium, larger and highest years, and these are assigned depending on the strength of the planet that is an alcohoden in natal. Lifespan can also be determined by the encounter of the hyleg with the anareta (the point of the destroyer of life) in primary directions. However, what is important here is the correlation of the assessment of the life force or strength of a horoscope, and thus the nature and constitution of an individual, with the duration of his life, and thus indicating how time is woven into the physis of the individual.

From this it is clear how Time is inherent in the nature of beings, for the potential promised by the natal chart will not be reached until it is symbolically activated by astrological predictive techniques, that is, before the Time for it comes. In accordance with the previously described, it should not be understood that these techniques condition or cause anything, they only symbolically show that my / your / her time has come. So, although it is considered that the third decade of life is  ideal period for marriage , it will not always be so, but everyone has their own time when he will attain that experience most completely. It is the same with career, and generally with luck or misfortune in life. Some people experience peaks in their older years, or earlier in their youth, although according to the general division, the zenith of life is in their 40s. By considering the natal chart, we can see what the natal potential of the native’s physis is, and how it, as an expression of its nature, will unfold through Time, in a completely unique way. The composition of the personality affects the pace at which things happen in a person’s life, ie. that tempo is contained in his nature, so someone will patiently and diligently build their achievements, someone will conquer them by assault and through struggle, someone will frustrate themselves again and again by giving up and retreating, and so on, everyone in his own rhythm unravels that fine weaving of their nature, at the same time getting to know and build themselves through consequential experiences. Astrology, as the language of Nature, in its symbolism abstracts all these aspects, allowing us an insight into that eternal Mystery that is Life.

All this ultimately leads us to the fundamental principle of Hermeticism – “as above so below.” The time cycles of the cosmos seem to be in a certain correlation with the inner cycles of human nature and its development, because there is an obvious synchronicity between the movements of celestial bodies with changes and events in human lives. Because the thread that connects the macrocosm and its cycles with our microcosm and its cycles is unbreakable. As we said earlier in the text The Question of Fate in Astrology, this connection is not causal nor can it be explained by some exact methods of modern science, it is simply mystical, presented in the only language by which it can be explained, by astrological symbolism that allows us to penetrate this connection and learn more about ourselves and our nature. Because of this described comprehensiveness and richness of symbolism that extends to all levels of existence and at all times, astrology will always possess the keys to the treasury of the Wisdom of Life!

Astrology – the language of Nature: part one

In my practice so far, I have noticed that there is a certain disagreement in understanding of the predictive power that astrology as a craft possesses, that is mainly expressed through the conflicting attitudes that people have towards the concept of fate. So some believe that astrology can really predict future events, because they “believe in fate”. It can also be said that among those who are skeptical on this issue, astrology enjoys the greatest credibility that arises from its presumed scientific basis, that is, their perception of the same. We dealt with this in one of the previous articles, The Question of Fate in Astrology, which explains that same concept and provides an answer to the question of why astrology works. On the other hand, people who do not believe in fate start from the assumption that life itself is unpredictable, emphasizing that this unpredictability is one of the essential beauties of life and that the concept of fate is contrary to the concept of freedom etc. In a certain sense, both views are valid, and that derives from the very concept of Life, that is, Nature. Everything is really possible in Nature, and in that respect there can be no exclusivity or limitation, which doesn’t come from the very nature of living beings. But it is precisely this nature that is at the same time limiting, because a sentient being can only develop in accordance with its own nature or physis. Man is no exception in this regard, whether he accepted this predictability or not. Therefore, it is clear that predictability can be disputed to some extent, but this is not the situation when it comes to the knowability of our development. This, of course, does not mean that it is unambiguous, ie. generally determined for each person in terms of his attainment, but on the contrary, individual sprouts are always different and that diversity should be achieved at all levels. This individual basis is one of the basic premises on which astrology as a hermetic discipline is based. This cognition of our individual development therefore arises from our very nature. Astrology is a language that can enable us to know that, and hence its predictive power. Carl Gustav Jung, a Swiss psychologist, expressed this most beautifully:

“We are born at a given moment, in a given place and, like vintage years of wine, we have the qualities of the year and of the season of which we are born. Astrology does not lay claim to anything more.”

This is so because nature shapes us with the mentioned qualities, and what is most closely explained to us through humoral medical theory. Humoral medicine (theory or pathology) is the name for a theory that developed in ancient times and held that the human body consists of four basic body juices (humors). These juices have traditionally been: blood, phlegm, black bile and yellow bile. According to that theory, the diseases were the result of an imbalance among the juices, and the treatment had to restore that balance. The theory was first put forward by the Greek physician and philosopher Empedocles in the second half of the 5th century BC. The theory is based on the teaching about the four basic elements that make up all things. The theory was further elaborated by Hippocrates, and later systematized by Galen, so that in the end it came to European doctors who learned it from medieval Arab doctors. The mutual proportion of these four humors forms the temperament of the person, which depending on the dominance of body juice in the body constitution can be choleric (yellow bile) – fire, melancholic (black bile) – earth, sanguine (blood) – air and phlegmatic (phlegm) – water . It is very rarely this pure, most often it represents a combination of all four, although the dominant one somehow always stands out. What is important to point out is that temperament is a predominantly innate personality trait determined by the biochemical characteristics of the limbic and central nervous systems. Given this, the assessment of temperament is also the starting point when analyzing the natal chart  – you can read more about it in the text How to (not) interpret the natal chart? Temperament is also considered the only unchanging constant, since it represents this fine weaving, the very foundation on which character is further built, because temperament is the one that colors all acquired experiences of a person, so his character traits will be differentiated on that basis. The concept of fate further fits into this, since it is closely connected with the character of the individual. This was noticed by another ancient philosopher, Heraclitus of Ephesus:

Everyone chooses – thinks, does, adopts … what follows him by nature, ie character (spirit). That is why some are “awake” (reasonable), while most are “sleepers” and their souls are mostly “moist” , i.e., limited, sensual, and irrational.

One can also see the connection of this thesis with the modern theory of the “law of attraction” and the concept of “our life is what our thoughts make it” motto, which would clearly indicate that our thoughts and actions are conditioned by our nature. Or as Jesus points out in the Sermon on the Mount, speaking of prayer, “… Your Father knows what you need before you ask him.”

Four temperaments

Astrology as a language of symbols contains all this information primarily in the natal chart. Astrology determines temperament by observing the following points: the ascendant, the Sun, the Moon, and even the Lord of the Geniture. It is especially interesting to consider the position of the Sun in this regard, which is not observed through the zodiac sign, but through the seasons, so here we have direct link with Jung’s interpretation that “… we carry within us the quality of the season in which we are born.” Since it is a sign that appears on the horizon at the moment of birth, the rising sign or ascendent ie. the horoscope has a special meaning because it imprints its symbolic qualities in the nature of the native. The significance of the second luminary, the Moon, is most obvious even on physical level, since science has also unequivocally determined the influence of its phases on life on earth. This influence is clearly manifested through the temperament of the native, since the phases of the Moon are observed in regard of relationship between qualities of heat, dryness, moist and cold (that determine temperament, eg choleric – hot and dry) which were observed to dominate in  a certain phase. So we have: from the new moon to the first quarter – hot and moist (sanguine); from the first quarter to the full moon – hot and dry (choleric); from the full moon to the last quarter – cold and dry (melancholic); from the last quarter to the new moon – cold and moist (phlegmatic).

However, what makes a natal chart the most suitable means of interpreting this predictability, ie of knowing one’s nature, and therefore one’s fate, is the fact that all of this is expressed in a unique language of symbols. The symbol represents the sublimation of different concepts, i.e. it is a combination of intuitive cognition and logical understanding and as such is an expression of Knowledge. When we look at a certain symbol, we can come to much deeper, and more importantly more complete, knowledge about everything that is somehow woven into it, than we ever could by simply reading tons of books about it or by just intuitively guessing. The symbol unites both these types of cognition into one and enables us to see the Truth that it represents without any relativization. Surely in many situations you could feel how this congruency of some inner voice and logical reasoning leaves that infallible impression of knowledge that leads you to enthusiastically exclaim “I knew it!” It is precisely such a connexion that  the symbol represents, and their power lays just there, since they transcend words and feelings and sublime them into a unique synthesis of Knowledge. This is also the reason why the highest Mysteries of human existence are transmitted precisely through symbols.

And he said, Unto you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God: but to others in parables; that seeing they might not see, and hearing they might not understand. (Gospel of Luke, 8:10)

In that sense, symbols can be considered as the language of Nature and her Intent in the philosophical sense. Astrological symbols are an example of such sublimation, as we shall see in later examples. This principle is perhaps most clearly expressed through Jung’s hypothetical construct of the archetype that signifies the universal, inherited framework of all experience. These are innate patterns of thought, feeling, and action that result from the centuries-long experience of many generations of ancestors. In a broader sense, the original model or prototype. The archetype is the basic structural and dynamic unit of the collective unconscious. It can be studied through its manifestations on a collective level (in myths, religious dogmas, poetic images, rituals, etc.) and on an individual level (in dreams, visions, symptoms and parapsychological experiences). However, his expression is always a symbol and it is always an allegorical representation of a certain aspect of Truth. Take, for example, the symbol of the cross, which is most often associated with sacrifice, and at the same time it is a clear symbol of Christianity, whose paradigm is based on sacrifice.

Symbols of the planets

Astrology works on this principle, considers the symbols of the planets, zodiac signs and other astrological factors which as such represent certain special aspects of Knowledge and the mentioned intent, expressed through a personal microcosm, described by their unique relationship in our “piece of heaven” and it is possible, and consequently derived, from the natural, hermetic teaching “as above so below.” It is very important to point out that when I talk about a natural plan, I am not talking about a master plan that can only take place one way that is pre-conceived and determined and that there is no other way. This intent that we have in mind here is more like something that is constantly evolving and somehow unwinding on its own, and all we can actually do is only to notice the symbolic constants of such unwinding. This is obvious on an individual level through the fact that our naturally given potentials may or may not develop, and the same can be said even for the civilizational currents through Time, which we will deal with in the following text.

But, let us return to the symbols in the natal chart. As an example, here I would like to highlight two planets that I truly consider transcendent, and that is the pair of Venus and Mars, and not some others that modern astrology favors without any basis. Surely the ideas of love and partnerships immediately come to your mind, which is only a part of their general symbolism, but which of course has a clear implication in that field that comes from their transcendental nature. So aren’t we most challenged to overcome our ego in love relationships?

Venus and Mars are inviting us to this transcendence in different ways. Astrology observes the principle of Mars through right action. It is an action that in some abstract sense transcends the demands of our ego, regardless of what personal views tell us that it is or is not right, and regardless of whether the personal ego tells us that it is smart or not. Traditionally, there are two places where Mars causes a person to transcend itself. One is the battlefield, where you do something your ego doesn’t want you to do at all – you sacrifice yourself through the right action. Another place where you sacrifice yourself through right action, putting your ego at risk, is the bed. That is why an orgasm is called a “small death”. Because if you are transcending your ego, it does not want that to happen, to give so much of yourself. Finally, whether you are male or female, the impulse of Mars in you wants to transcend the ego, because then you can find beauty.

If Mars wants to transcend the ego through right action, Venus wants to the same but by sacrificing in a different way – by giving that transcends the ego. What do you do when you connect your Venus with someone? You start buying gifts. And your ego doesn’t want that, he wants presents for himself. Or spend time cooking for another person, while your ego doesn’t really care what he or she will eat! And when your Venus is seriously attached, you completely transcend your life by wrapping it in a fine little ball and offer it to another person, saying, “Look, do you want this, do you want to marry me?” This principle of giving comes from a related aspiration towards union which is, clearly, also a symbolic expression of Venus, which at the deepest level wants to unite us with God (hence in traditional iconography the Holy Spirit is depicted as a dove, a bird ruled by Venus), while at the synastry level this aspiration is expressed through desire to connect with another person. Interestingly, the symbol of Venus contains the previously mentioned symbol of the cross.

All in all, this example of Venus and Mars in their symbolic expressions of our transcendent needs clearly tells us to what extent we can observe astrological symbolism and what insights it can give us about ourselves and our nature, and hence destiny. For destiny is only a set of experiences derived from  our needs and desires and as such represents the unwinding of our nature through those experiences, ultimately and possibly leading us to Wisdom, to the development of our potential, or to the failure that nature will reject.
